Jean-Paul Gaultier presented his Spring 2012 Couture collection inspired by Amy Winehouse
The French designer Jean Paul Gaultier recently presented his Spring 2012 Couture collection at Paris Fashion Week, which also included some stunning pieces inspired by late soul singer Amy Winehouse. While models wore beehive hairdos, also daubed in heavy eyeliner and even, smoke cigarettes while running on the catwalk, Amy's hit "Rehab" provided the backdrop.
Despite he explained his intentions were just pure in intent, as he explained "I think Amy Winehouse was truly a fashion icon", the father of soulful singer Mitch Winehouse found this inappropiate. He accused the French designer of cashing in on Amy's death by using her as his new inspiration. Mitch Winehouse said the collection unveiled at the Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday was "in bad taste". More, the former taxi driver added : "To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on."
"We're proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste," Mitch added.
Meanwhile, The New York Times' fashion critic, Cathy Horyn appreciated designer's new collection: "She was not a great beauty; her head and features were rather large for the rest of her body, and her fashion sense was a mixture of juke-joint singer and Eighties-obsessed London teenager," Horyn noted, highlighting Winehouse's "dynamic" awkwardness in contrast with fashion's "sleek," "purring" ideals. And she praised Gaultier's ability to bring those distinct quirks to his runway without it coming off as "artificial."
