Sharapova and Azarenka running for the No. 1 rank, Murray and Djokovic struggle for the final with Federer
In their goal to win the No.1 ranking, the 24-year-old Russian player Maria Sharapova and the 22-year-old Belarussian Victoria Azarenka will be playing for the first Grand Slam of the year during the Saturday final, January 28th at the Australian Open.
Currently World No.3, Azarenka, says the ranking is still a target. She stated after her fourth-round win she would be "lying" if she said it wasn't on her mind. Meanwhile, the former No. 1 Sharapova said isn't that concerned and only wants to add to her trophy collection. "Having been in the position before, doesn't really (add anything to the final) to me," Sharapova said. "I think personally, for me, it's more about the Grand Slam win than the No. 1 ranking. That's just always been the goal for me."
Meanwhile, the second men's semi-final of Australian Open between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic is taking place at Melbourne. The winner will be playing against World No. 2 Rafael Nadal (who won against Roger Federer in the first semi-final) on Sunday, January 29th. Djokovic has won the first and the forth set (6-3, 6-1), while Murray won the second and the third set (6-3, 7-6); Djokovic is still on the lead of the fifth set with 3-2 (7:58 a.m).
Update: Djokovic beats Murray in a match that lasted about five hours winning the fifth set 7-5 to complete his victory (6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1, 7-5) and is now ready to play on Sunday against 25-year-ols Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
