When The Avengers finally debuted in the U.S. On Friday, it scored the second highest opening day of all-time , surpassed only by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2. A strong Friday is obviously a good omen for a movie vying for a record opening weekend. THR notes "Deathly Hallows Part 2" went on to score the highest opening weekend of all time by earning $169.2 million. Many believe "The Avengers" may bring in over $170 million, which would make the first Marvel movie marketed by Disney the new king of the domestic box office.

The film collected $18.7 million from midnight showings alone, the highest midnight open for a superhero movie.

At the same time, "Avengers" has also been killing it at the international box office, having already raked in over $300 million. The film has already passed all other Marvel movies' lifetime grosses except "Iron Man," and is expected to pass that film by Saturday at the latest.

Dropping to number two is Screen Gems' "Think Like A Man" with another $2.6 million and $67.7 million so far. The crossover romantic comedy should soar past $75 million by Sunday and $100 million isn't out of the question.

Third place went to Warner Bros.' solid double "The Lucky One."
