Chris Columbus is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. Columbus had most success with the first film in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, along with Home Alone, winning a British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Film.

Born Christopher Joseph Columbus on September 10, 1958 in Spangler, Pennsylvania. Raised in Ohio, Columbus loved comic books and horror films as a boy, eventually setting his sights on movie making and enrolling at Tisch School of the Arts as a film student at New York University. He sold his first screenplay while still in school, and his fourth, Gremlins, to legendary director Steven Spielberg. The young writer moved to Los Angeles to work on rewrites for the script, along with developing two others for the director: Young Sherlock Holmes and The Goonies, both released in 1985.

In 1988, Columbus made his directorial debut with the ill-reviewed teen comedy Adventures in Babysitting. The next film he directed, Home Alone was a huge success, followed by another box office hit Mrs. Doubtfire starring Robin Williams. Most recently, Columbus took on the challenge of bringing J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter to life as director for the much-anticipated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001 and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002.

Columbus is married to choreographer Monica Devereux. The couple has two daughters and a son.
