Ed Sheeran is an English folk acoustic singer songwriter currently signed under Atlantic Records.

Sheeran was born Edward Christopher Sheeran, in Halifax, West Yorkshire before moving to Framlingham, Suffolk. In his time in Suffolk, he was known to have flourished as a hidden talent when it came to music. He learned guitar at a very young age, and began writing songs during his time at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham. By the time Sheeran had left school, he was already certain that music was going to play a major part in his life, and therefore studied at Access To Music in Norwich before moving to London which improved his chances of getting gigs.

Sheeran began recording in 2005, which lead to the release of his first EP, The Orange Room EP. Sheeran also released two albums, a self titled one in 2006 and Want Some? in 2007 gaining little attention. After Sheeran moved to London and had done extensive gigging, performing songs from his EP and albums, as well as ones which he had recently written, he decided to release another EP, You Need Me in late 2009. However, it wasn’t until February 2010 that Sheeran began to get noticed after he posted a video through SB.tv displaying his diverse style. This video led to mainstream rapper Example asking Sheeran to tour with him. Throughout 2010, Sheeran began to be seen by more and more people over the internet through Youtube and his fan-base grew incredibly, with him also getting credit from The Independent newspaper, England football captain Rio Ferdinand and even Elton John.

“Collaborations was the peak of my independent career,” Ed says. “Now I am beginning my signed career. You have to pass the barriers, go to the next level. Some independent people do it well, but some never progress far enough. Signing to a label is the smart thing to do if you have the right deal. And I have the right deal.”

So now there is the album, entitled ‘+’. “I’d like to say it’s all about positivity,” Ed laughs, “but really it’s just a cool sign that I love. It is also one step on from all the independent releases I have done.”

"The A Team" 2012 single:

Ed’s album is out in September and features a host of very special songs. Small Bump is a true story, with the most heart-wrenching twist, about a friend and her baby. Lego House is a love song that imagines a world where you can, (“pick up the pieces and build a lego house, and if things go wrong we can knock it down!”). Wake Me Up was written while sat, really drunk, under a tree by Jamie Foxx’s pool (that’s another story). Grade 8 (“your body is my ball-point pen/ and your mind is my new best friend…”) sees Ed as a worrier/warrior with bloodshot eyes, his heartstrings being twanged by a virtuoso guitarist.

“I have slept on a different sofa every night for two and a half years so I can do this,” Ed says. “But the sofa thing can get lonely. I’m ready for my own place now; I’m ready for the next level.”

Ed Sheeran's next single, the hip hop influenced "You Need Me, I Don't Need You," was another top 5 hit single and reached #1 on the UK R&B chart. The debut album + followed in September and opened at the top of the UK album chart. It ultimately was certified triple platinum and ranked among the top 10 selling albums of the year in the UK. The album's third single "Lego House" once again reached the pop top 5.

x the second studio album by Sheeran was released in 2015. The album went straight to number one in both the UK and the US. x has had five singles thus far Sing, Don't, Thinking Out Loud, Bloodstream and Photograph.

Ed Sheeran recently was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by the University Campus Suffolk (UCS). More songs and lyrics can be found here.
