James V. Taranik was an American geologist and physicist.

Geophysicist and remote-sensing technology expert who worked at NASA during the early space shuttle missions. Later, as President of the Desert Research Institute, he adapted the institute's sophisticated satellite imagery to new areas of research, including environmental research and geological exploration.
