Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter who specializes in English-language EDM and dance-pop. Her powerful voice and passionate delivery attracted an international fan base, first on social media and then with singles throughout the 2010s, leading to a Top 30 appearance on Billboard's independent albums chart with her debut album, 2019's Clarity. She made her major-label debut with the single "Future Starts Now" in 2021.

Petras has identified herself as female since toddlerhood, and she made headlines for having completed a full gender transition at the age of 16, believed to be the youngest on record at the time. In the meantime, she had already begun working as a model, including a series of national TV ads for a German hair salon chain. She graduated from uploading covers to YouTube to working with a producer on her debut single, "Fade Away" released in 2008. Her first EP, One Piece of Tape, followed in 2011.

In October 2019, Petras released second album "TURN OFF THE LIGHT," taking the place of "TURN OFF THE LIGHT, VOL. 2", the scheduled sequel EP to Petras' 2018 EP ",TURN OFF THE LIGHT, VOL. 1." Like the VOL. 1 EP, it is a Halloween-themed album. In addition to all tracks from the VOL. 1 EP, the album includes nine new songs. "The Clarity Tour" started on October 21, 2019 in Vancouver, Canada and concluded on February 11, 2020 in London, United Kingdom. On the same day, she released the single "Reminds Me". That same month, she announced that she would be the supporting act on the European leg of Camila Cabello's The Romance Tour, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On 7 May 2021, Petras released the single "Malibu" as the first single off of her third studio album. She has described the song as "escapist pop" and commented that "This is really a new start, the beginning of a new chapter and a new album cycle," she says. "I don't feel heartbroken anymore. I don't feel caught up in that. I just want to make music that makes me want to dance and makes me forget about all the stupid stuff right now." She featured on the song "Broken Glass" by Kygo, from his album Golden Hour, released 29 May.

On 29th July 2021, Petras performed a set at Lollapalooza, in Chicago including a number of songs from 'ERA 1' and 'Clarity', but most notably, she performed an, as of then, unreleased song, titled 'Future Starts Now'. The song was teased for a month, until it was finally released on 27th August, as her second single off of her third studio album, accompanied by a lyric video for the song.
