Richards' siblings are the actresses Kathy Richards (born 1959) and Kyle Richards (born 1969). Socialites Nicky and Paris Hilton are her nieces, daughters of her sister, Kathy.

Her career began as a child in the early 1970s. From 1970—1971, Richards starred as Prudence Everett in the television series Nanny and the Professor, with costars Richard Long, Juliet Mills, Trent Lehman and David Doremus. She also starred in several Disney films, including Escape to Witch Mountain, No Deposit, No Return and Return from Witch Mountain. She starred in an episode of Little House on the Prairie as Olga Nordstorm, Laura Ingalls' friend with one leg shorter than the other.

In 1976, Richards also appeared in Disney's Whiz Kid Capers series (The Whiz Kid And The Carnival Caper, The Whiz Kid And The Mystery at Riverton) a two-part TV Movie for The Wonderful World of Disney.

In 1977, Kim and her sister Kyle both appeared as the daughters of James Brolin in The Car. By 1978, Richards teamed up once again with Witch Mountain co-star Ike Eisenmann for the made-for-television movie Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell.

In the John Carpenter film Assault on Precinct 13, she played a child who was murdered. She later starred in the short-lived series Hello, Larry and appeared as a guest on numerous episodes of popular American television shows including Diff'rent Strokes, Alice, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Little House on the Prairie, CHiPs, Magnum, P.I., The Dukes of Hazzard and The Rockford Files.

While in her young adulthood, Richards appeared in the films Meatballs Part II, Tuff Turf and Escape. In addition, she also co-produced Escape along with then-husband G. Monty Brinson. After 1990, Richards went into semi-retirement.

It has recently been announced that Kim will join her sister Kyle as full cast members of the newest incarnation of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills which will be airing on Bravo in October 2010.

Richards made a cameo appearance in Race to Witch Mountain, playing a waitress named "Tia", which was also her character's name in the 1975 original and 1978 sequel.

Personal

Richards has been married twice. Her first marriage was to G. Monty Brinson, with whom she had one daughter, Brooke Ashley, born on February 21, 1986. Richards was then married to Gregory Davis, with whom she had two children, Whitney and Chad. Both marriages ended in divorce.

Richards also has a daughter, Kimberly, with former boyfriend John Jackson.

Richards began dating Maine entrepreneur Todd Jason Voisine in 2009. Voisine has been instrumental in Richards' "comeback career" as she has begun appearing in public more frequently of late.
