Léon Zitrone est âgé de six ans quand sa famille, fuyant le stalinisme, arrive en France.
Il apprend rapidement le français et fait des études de droit et de chimie. Mais en 1948, grâce à sa maîtrise parfaite du français et du russe mais aussi de l'anglais et de l'allemand, il obtient un poste à la direction des émissions vers l'étranger à la Radiodiffusion Française.
En 1959, il prend l'antenne d'une télévision naissante ; le succès est immédiat. Il présente le journal télévisé de TF1 de 1961 à 1975, il entre à Antenne 2 en tant que reporter puis reprend le "20 heures" jusqu'en 1981.
Léon Zitrone a marqué plusieurs générations de téléspectateurs grâce à son énergie communicative, sa langue fleurie, et son incroyable polyvalence. Car s'il était un journaliste reconnu, il faisait aussi preuve d'un humour ravageur, notamment à RTL aux 'Grosses têtes', ou aux côtés de Guy Lux et Simone Garnier dans les jeux 'Intervilles'.
Il meurt le 25 novembre 1995, jour de ses 81 ans.
