Marcell Jansen (born 4 November 1985 in Mönchengladbach) is a German footballer who plays for Hamburger SV and Germany. He is well known for his accurate crossing and pace, despite his tall stature. Jansen has represented his country on 30 occasions so far, showing up as left-back. On club level he has also played on the left of midfield and left wingback, back in his youth years, also featured as left winger and even striker, a term declaring his versatility. He appeared in injury time during UEFA Euro 2008 as striker.

This speedy and highly-creative left-sided midfielder or left-back looked to be out of World Cup contention when he badly injured his ankle this spring. However, coach Joachim Low refused to give up on him and he has managed to recover just in time. "I am pleased for Marcell that he will be joining us," says the Germany coach. "He brings quality to the squad."

Jansen first came to the fore at Borussia Monchengladbach, making such an impact in his early days that he was included in the squad for the 2006 World Cup, a tournament in which he made just the one starting appearance in the third-place play-off against Portugal.

Immediately after those finals he moved to Bayern Munich in a £8.5 million deal, but in his two years there did not do himself justice, undermined by injuries and loss of form. In 2008 he made the switch to Hamburg.
