Prashanth was born in Chennai to a Tamilian father and a Telugu mother. His father Thyagarajan is an actor and director in Tamil films while his maternal grandfather, Peketi Sivaram, was an actor and an acclaimed director of Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada films. He also has a sister, Preethi Thyagarajan. He studied in Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, in Chetpet.he is belonged to caste of pallar.(Devendrakulam).

Prashanth Thiagarajan debuted in 1990 in the film Vaigasi Poranthachu when he was 17 years old. His other notable films include Balu Mahendra's Vanna Vannna Pookal released in 1991 and R. K. Selvamani's Chembaruthi released in 1992. In Guest Appearance in Ajithkumar's Kallurivasal (1996). Then in 1998, Prashanth appeared in S. Shankar's blockbuster film Jeans. His other huge hit films include Kannedhirey Thondrinal (1998), Jodi (1999), Parthen Rasithen (2000), Thamizh (2002), (Simran acted as a co-star in all these four films) and Winner (2003). In the film industry Prasanth had worked with many well-known directors such as Balu Mahendra, Mani Ratnam, S. Shankar, R.K. Selvamani, Vasanth, Agathiyan.


In 2006, Prashanth filed a case in the family court, claiming 29 allegations against Grihalakshmi. The allegations include her visit to clubs and pubs every night; coming home late at midnight; not coming to home after late party's; her addiction to drinking habits and so on. In 2007, he also proved her as a bigamy by producing necessary documents in the court. It revealed that she was married to Venu prasad, a malayalee who married her on December 31, 1998, in the sub registrar at Ambattur. The Court gave the judgement that the marriage held to him is not an legal marriage.
