The Mozart of Madras, Allah Rakha Rahman (A. R. Rahman) born January 6, 1966 is is an Indian film composer, record producer, musician and singer.
His film scoring career began in the early 1990s. He has won thirteen Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, two Grammy Awards, and two Academy Awards. So far, he has composed music for around form films in last eight years, and each film song of his has been a hit. Born on January 6, 1966, Rahman is a soft mannered, devout Muslim. He is absolutely committed to his work , has immense faith in god, and the desire to try out different things. All these qualities have helped him become more and more creative and emerge as the unchallenged leader in Indian cinema music.
A.R. Rahman exudes his songs with a refined cinematic sensibility and with a touch of Indian cultural heritage. He has revolutionized the Indian cinema music with his computer-aided music. ‘Bombay’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Taal’ ‘Dill Se’, ’sane’, ‘pokier’ and ’sativa’ are some of the films for which he scored super hit music. His album ‘Vande Mataram’ was a tribute to India’s hard earned independence. He has been chosen as the best music director for four consecutive years.
Rahman has been involved in several projects aside from film. He made an album Vande Mataram (1997) on India's 50th anniversary of independence to commercial success. He followed it up with an album for the Bharat Bala–directed video Jana Gana Mana, a conglomeration of performances by many leading exponents/artists of Indian classical music. Rahman has written jingles for ads and composed several orchestrations for athletic events, T.V. and internet media publications, documentaries and short films.
In 1999 Rahman, along with choreographers Shobhana and Prabhu Deva Sundaram and a Tamil cinema dancing troupe performed with Michael Jackson in Munich, Germany, for his "Michael Jackson and Friends Concert
