Subrata Roy Sahara is the Founder, Managing Worker and Chairman of Sahara India Group, one of India’s largest multi-diversified business conglomerates.

Mr. Subrata Roy Sahara founded Sahara India Pariwar in the year 1978 with only Rs. 2000 (GBP 29), one office of 10’ X 12’, 2 assistants and a vision that has enabled Sahara India Group to grow into one of the major conglomerates of India, with a book value of gross assets of more than USD 13 billion (GBP 8.65 billion).

Under his dynamic leadership, the group has traversed its corporate journey over the last 3 decades and spread its wings across a wide range of business verticals. The Sahara Group has a major presence in sectors like financial services, housing finance, mutual funds, life insurance, city development, real estate activities, print and television media, film production, sports, information technology, health care, tourism, hospitality and consumer products.

Sahara is based upon Mr. Subrata Roy Sahara’s belief in the ethos of a family (the reason why the group is called a Pariwar - family in Hindi) and was termed by the Time magazine as ‘the second largest employer in India after the Indian Railways’. He was also invited by Harvard School of Business to deliver a lecture on this business philosophy. The Sahara family consists of 9 lac workers – yet nobody has ever felt the need for a trade union; it also has 2200 establishments across India. Sahara also believes that a Corporate should work as an agent of social change. It therefore also provides employment at the doorstep even in the smallest of small villages.

The Sahara Group’s financial services have inculcated the habit of savings even in the most backward areas of India. The Group today enjoys the faith and patronage of tens of millions of depositors. The total investment accounts with Sahara are more than 70 million and include depositors from all strata and demographies of India.

With its entry into the real estate sector more than 10 years back, the Sahara Group has today developed a number of townships, residential and commercial projects. The Aamby Valley City – a large scale luxury city spread over more than 10,000 acres (4,047 Hectares), is Sahara’s premium city development project. It is also independent India’s first hill city, developed by a private sector entity.

The vision of Mr. Subrata Roy Sahara, is to develop 217 integrated townships which will provide quality lifestyle to the middle class people across India. The integrated townships, spread on 80 to 300 acres (41 – 32 Hectares), are designed to accommodate 2,000 to 4,000 residential units, including high rise apartment buildings, duplex apartments, independent houses, row houses, semi-detached houses and bungalows. The integrated townships are planned to be self-sufficient communities, each with an array of commercial facilities and services like Hospital, School, Shopping Mall & Multiplex, Hotel & Club. By placing these commercial centres around the periphery of integrated townships, the Sahara City Homes will be able to cater to both, the integrated township residents and also the customers that may reside outside of the integrated township. Moreover, the townships will also have Multi-Level Security System, Community Centers, a Floodlit Central Park with many outdoor and Indoor Games facilities, Transport Services, Power supply with full back up, its own drinking water plant, seamless connectivity, and series of essential services.

The Sahara City Homes townships are a vision to provide lifestyle solution to the diverse needs of aspiring India. Sahara’s real estate company is already in the process of developing 88 ‘Sahara City Homes’ integrated townships along with Sahara Grace brand of 15 residential complexes, in first phase, across India, to provide more than 286,000 residential units and a range of commercial spaces.
The Group has major footprints in media & entertainment industry with 3 entertainment television channels, a national Hindi News Channel, bouquet of 36 regional city centric News Channels and News Publications in Hindi, English and Urdu, and one of India's largest movie production house.
