Étienne Taillemite, est inspecteur général honoraire des archives de France. Il a consacré la plus grande partie de sa carrière à l'histoire maritime. Ancien président de la Commission française d'histoire maritime, il devient en 1986 président de l'Académie de marine.
Étienne Taillemite est l'auteur de nombreux articles, d'une édition des journaux du voyage de Bougainville (Imprimerie Nationale), d'un Dictionnaire des marins français (Tallandier), de Marins français à la découverte du monde : de Jacques Cartier à Dumont d'Urville (Fayard); La Percée de l'Europe sur les océans, vers 1690-vers 1790 (PUS) ; La Fayette (Fayard).
