Vladimir Putin took the oath for his third term as Russia's President

Mr Putin won the controversial elections in March and has now returned to the Kremlin where he was sworn in for a third term as Russia's president.
Amidst popular protests which happened on Sunday, Vladimir Putin has been inaugurated as President of Russia on Monday, May 7 during a lavish ceremony in the the capital, Moscow.

Mr Putin won the controversial elections in March and has now returned to the Kremlin where he was sworn in for a third term as Russia's president. In the opulent, gold-covered St George's hall a stone-faced Putin (which once was the throne room of the Russian tsars) took the oath of office Monday and delivered a brief speech in which he spoke of the need to strengthen Russia's democracy and provide security for its people.

A small group of protesters attempted to gather near the Kremlin but were quickly arrested and pushed back. Meanwhile, across town a group of protesters gathered in Pushkin Square after police blocked off the avenues along Putin’s route to the Kremlin. Opposition leaders say they had planned to cover the route in white ribbons, the symbol of the opposition. Riot police soon broke up the gathering and Russian opposition outlets aired footage of protesters being arrested.

Putin is returning to the presidency after four years as Prime Minister facing many more challenges than when he departed due to term limits.

He said Mr Medvedev had given a new impulse to modernisation, and the "transformation" of Russia must continue. He also spoke of the need to strengthen Russian democracy and constitutional rights.

"I consider it to be the meaning of my whole life and my obligation to serve my fatherland and our people," Mr Putin said.

"We will achieve our goals if we are a single, united people - if we hold our fatherland dear, strengthen Russian democracy, constitutional rights and freedoms."

On Sunday tens of thousands of people attended what appeared to be the largest anti-Putin protest since they began in December.
